In Times Such As These…

I haven’t really complained about knee pain since my surgery on June 10. However, today I wish I could be just as Mister Potato Head and take off my right knee so that I can’t feel the pain it’s causing me today…

Wouldn’t it be convenient and a total relief if we could do as Mister Potato Head does?

Who else can relate?

Lupus Health: An Investment, Not An Expense

I was diagnosed with lupus back in 2012. Boy what a journey that has been. It has definitely been an uphill battle- especially the first couple of years. I was seeing doctor after doctor, being admitted into the hospital and made to feel like a test dummy with all the poking and prodding of needles and all the medication prescribed to me at the time.

It was not until I began to change my diet that the doctor’s visits became less and less and the medication lists became shorter and shorter.

I eliminated the dairy products, FIRST!

My physician and I was able to determine that the large amounts of dairy consumption proved to be a HUGE contributing factor as to why the inflammation in my body, mainly the inflammation in my lungs, simply just would not go away.

With eating clean- consuming fruits, veggies, and chicken or fish, I have been able to tame my lupus. I have the occasional knee and  joint pain, fatigue, and just not so good days, but lupus has not been able to take hold of my life and make me feel  as terribly as it did in the beginning. I refuse to allow it to take over!

Tender Points And Tender Joints

I had so many ideas come to mind when I ran across this post of the day. If you know me, and if you are aware of the way lupus makes me or any individual battling lupus feel, then you know that the word tender makes way for tons of options and angles to cover…. BUT, I chose to make this post an informative one. Here goes…
Lupus:
A disease that literally causes every crevice of your body to ache. A disease that makes the pain widespread and everything so tender to touch.

Tender:
(of a part of the body) sensitive to pain.
“the pale, tender skin of her forearm

The two words go hand in hand, like two peas in a pod. Lupus makes room for all sorts of pain sensitivities. It allows for every part of your body to become susceptible to pain.

OUCH!

“Joint pain or arthritis is experienced by 95 percent of people with lupus at some time during the course of their disease. In fact, joint pain is usually the first symptom of lupus. Unlike rheumatoid arthritis, the arthritis of lupus tends to be temporary. It is also less damaging to the joints. The joints most commonly involved are those of the fingers, wrists, and knees. Elbows, ankles, and shoulders are not affected as often. When a particular joint is affected on one side of the body, the same joint on the other side of the body is usually affected as well.”

But here are ways to help alleviate those tender joints…

Taking Care of Your Tender Joints

If you suffer from joint or muscle pain, the first goal is to keep pain at a tolerable level. You can do this in several ways:

  • Apply heat or cold to the affected joints
  • Support the affected joints with pillows, blankets, or splints
  • Rest the affected joints as much as possible and keep them elevated to reduce swelling

Your second goal is to maintain joint function and increase muscle strength. You can do this by using the following techniques:

  • Take warm showers or baths to lessen stiffness
  • Lessen the weight on an acutely inflamed joint by sitting or lying down. Avoid strenuous activity and avoid any activity that causes increased pain, swelling, tenderness, or heat to the affected joint
  • Gently move the affected joint yourself when the acute inflammation is over.

It Only Takes One!

FB_IMG_1496966760674I saw this picture and instantly thought of my son Jayden. He is the reason why I get up each and every day EVEN WHEN lupus says nope and my body just wants to lay down and rest the day away.

He’s my inspiration. He’s the someone I would love to hear say “because of you I didn’t give up.”

I’m a lupus warrior, I’m lupus strong!

I’m Sorry

Sometimes I feel so bad for having to cancel on my friends.

Sometimes I feel guilty for having to leave an event after only being present for maybe an hour.

Sometimes I feel like a loner when I am unable to attend a birthday party, wedding or family birthday party.

And Sometimes I feel so depressed when I am unable to have just a normal girls night out!

It’s crazy the things that lupus has made me miss.

Home · What Is Lupus?

No, It Cannot…

A lot of the times I allow lupus to determine what I can and cannot do with my life. I allow it to alter my mood, alter my relationships with my friends and family, and alter the way I go about living my life.

But long are the days where I allow lupus to steal my joy. No more will lupus control the things that I do. No longer will I allow the way that lupus makes me feel, cause me to make excuses for myself.

“Lupus can no longer take away my faith, shatter my hopes, or lessen my love. It can no longer destroy the true friendships that I have, invade my soul,  or take away my eternal life.”

Lupus won’t conquer my spirit!
